Matt Bevin is Doubling Down on His New Attack on Health Care for People With Pre-Existing Conditions

After Matt Bevin joined a health care lawsuit that threatens vital coverage for people with pre-existing conditions, the governor’s administration is now doubling down on his harmful agenda.

According to Spectrum News 1, Bevin is taking legal action to prop up “insurance plans that a judge determined a ‘run around’ to the Affordable Care Act.” Bevin’s plan would make it possible for insurance companies to once again skirt the ACA’s Essential Health Benefits requirements that ensure people with many basic pre-existing conditions get the care they need, including prescription drug coverage, maternity care, and mental health services.

Bevin’s harmful health care agenda pits him against the American Medical Association, which said it would “revive pre-existing condition discrimination,” while Families USA said the rule Bevin is defending “harms people with preexisting conditions the most.”

The American Cancer Society also described the rule Bevin supports, saying it will “seriously erode the availability of affordable comprehensive coverage in most states’ individual and small group markets that is critical to cancer patients and survivors.”

Yesterday, the Kentucky Democratic Party called on Matt Bevin to withdraw from his harmful legal action.

“Matt Bevin has been trying to dismantle health care protections for the most needy Kentuckians since he first took office. This is just another attempt to take us backwards. Bevin is wrong on health care and wrong for Kentucky,” said Kentucky Democratic Party Spokesperson Marisa McNee. “As usual Governor Bevin and his lackeys think they can throw a temper tantrum and get what they want. Calling on Attorney General Beshear to retract his statement in support of full health care protections for all Kentuckians is just another pathetic attempt to hide from his own disastrous record.”
