KDP Statement on Bombshell Revelation about Whitney Westerfield’s Push for Clemency for Violent Offender
Late Tuesday, the Courier-Journal revealed that State Senator Whitney Westerfield, head of the Senate Judiciary Committee, pushed former Gov. Matt Bevin for clemency for Dakota Jones, who was convicted in a violent incident involving a minor. Westerfield then tried to cover up his involvement in the matter.
The following is a statement from Marisa McNee, spokesperson for the Kentucky Democratic Party:
“As attorney general, Governor Beshear fought for justice for the victim of this violent crime because it was the right thing to do. The idea that Whitney Westerfield would present himself as some sort of victim’s advocate while secretly advocating for clemency for this violent offender is such a grotesque betrayal, it’s soul-shocking. He owes his constituents, and all Kentuckians, an apology. Westerfield should be ashamed of himself for advocating for one of Matt Bevin’s most egregious commutations and then denying he advocated for leniency. Kentuckians are rightly disgusted and angry. We all deserve better than this from our elected officials.”
