Wheatley answers call for public service

Former Covington firefighter Buddy Wheatley has answered the call for public service.

Wheatley is running for the state’s 65th House District representing part of Kenton County.

Wheatley’s 20-year career as a Covington firefighter is part of a family legacy which spans four generations.  Along with his brother, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, the Wheatley family represents nearly 100 years of firefighting service to the people of Covington.

“As state representative, I vow to advocate for all of the people of the 65th District, all of the time,” Wheatley said.

“I am responding to the call of public service again after having retired as fire chief at the Covington Fire Department, a 4th generation Covington firefighter spanning nearly 100 years.”

Wheatley became active in the Covington Professional Firefighters IAFF Local 38 early in his fire department career, eventually serving as secretary-treasurer for eight years, and went on to become secretary-treasurer of the Kentucky Professional Firefighters.

He attended NKU’s Salmon P. Chase Law School while serving as fire chief.  After passing the bar exam in 2009, Buddy launched a career as a solo labor attorney, working on behalf of public sector labor unions.  He currently serves as union co-chair of the American Bar Association’s Section of Labor and Employer State and Local Government Bargaining Committee.

“I was born, brought up in, worked in, and a raised a family in the 65th District, and now run a small business here,” Wheatley said. “My life’s experiences in the district will be woven into every vote I make on behalf of residents, workers, and visitors. Public education, K-12 and higher education and the teachers who make it all work, will be a strong focus of my campaign.”

Protecting working families and fair labor laws, bettering health outcomes in Kentucky, and bringing infrastructure and road improvements to the district are also top priorities for Wheatley’s campaign.
