FRANKFORT, Ky.—Today, on the heels of President Trump’s move to effectively gut the U.S. Department of Education, Kentucky Democratic Party (KDP) Chair Colmon Elridge released the following statement calling on the Kentucky General Assembly to fight for Kentucky’s students, their families and communities at risk of losing the vital services they need to thrive.

“Kentucky schools receive more than $1 billion in federal education grants each year. These funds fuel school meal programs, support students with special needs, and provide resources for students whose families struggle to get by. Without these vital resources, some Kentucky school districts could lose up to half of their budgets.

“All of Kentucky’s leaders — Democrats and Republicans — should be concerned about these cuts and what they will mean for Kentucky’s students and school districts. So far, Republican leaders in the General Assembly have focused on removing fluoride from drinking water or enabling the sale of raw milk rather than standing up to a federal government dead set on harming Kentuckians.”
